I was just reading about the last B-36.
It was on display in Ft. Worth, and someone wanted it moved.
The plan was to make it minimally flyable and ferry it 3 miles to another location. It was in rough shape, having been vandalized, so it would take a lot of work to get it moving. And they actually found a pilot willing to do the job (but no more than the three miles, or a complete rebuild would be needed, he said).
Well, the Air Force, who had "loaned" the plane to Ft. Worth, denied permission. Their reason? It was a strategic weapon and someone might steal it and use it! Now remember, this was in the late 1970s.
Come on! Get real! How can you steal something with a 200 foot wing span and six 3400 HP engines (even if you could find a crew)? As soon as you take off everyone within 50 miles is going to know!
They ended up taking it apart and moving a piece at a time.
