I need to build a fuel tank for my Flitzer Goblin project. Plans call for .064" aluminum. Not being a gas welder and never having attempted to TIG weld aluminum, I am exploring the idea of using 20 ga. (.036) or 22 ga (.030) mild steel. Looks like .064 alu weighs .91 lbs/ft2, with 20 ga. steel = 1.47 and 22 ga. = 1.22.
Obviously there would be a weight penalty, but not as much as I originally thought.
I couldn't find a thread directly on this topic, so I'm wondering what people advise? Is this ever done?
Somewhere I think I read that Yodel plans call for a thin steel tank.
Thanks
