I've been considering starting work on a pietenpol while still living in an apartment. I could put off the porject, save up for the down payment on the house, but i wanna build *now*. I figure if i work at a reasonable rate I'll have made enough progress when I finally decide/can afford to buy a house I'll be ready to start putting the big pieces together. In the search for a good apartment for this, I know I'll need enough space to build the wings and fuselage and be able to get them out the door. That's not a big issue to find an apartment that can handle that. The issue is having enough room to do that while storing the other pieces that I've built. So I figured, what is a self storage facility but a really small hangar? Which leads me to some questions, of which I'm sure people here have felt with before.

1) as long as I varnish the wooden assemblies before storing them, is there anything I need to be worried about with using an non-climate-controlled storage facility? I figure outdoor access would be easiest to be able to move wings and the fuselage into/out of.

2) insurance. I've heard a couple horror stories about ****ty self storage facilities. I wanna make sure that I would have my project covered. This is something I would take up with my renters insurance, right?

3) travel. I know this is an issue with people who try to design trailerable planes. I don't plan on taking everything between my apartment and the self storage on a weekly basis, but if I were to say, construct it, store it, bring it back to cover, store, make a few more trips back and forth before finally being moved to a hangar, what issues would I be looking at for risk of damaging parts? I was thinking that carefully placed carpet padding would prevent any damage from my truck or securing the pieces in the truck would do the job. Is this reasonable?

4) anyone else here do this and have some wisdom about it?
