Because this question comes up from time to time, I thought I'd provide a data point for today's cost of insuring ultralight-style aircraft.
As you may recall, I have a Quicksilver Sprint II project I've been working on which I'll provide a project log update to pretty soon. I talked to an underwriter at Oshkosh last year who understood my flying needs (the *only* one of all that I talked to) and I was happy to give him a call when I was ready to insure. The usual insurance product suspects are: full coverage with hull and liability only.
The quoted premiums were (drumroll):
Full coverage with $25K hull: $5700
Liability only: $710
You can probably guess which one I chose. For what I paid and have in that airplane, I could buy the whole plane again in two years of insurance premiums. If I bought a brand new one from the factory, I could buy the whole plane again in roughly six years of insurance premiums. I think I'll stick with self-insuring this one.
