Got curious about the age of pilots in homebuilt accidents, so I extracted the pilot age data from the 2008-2022 NTSB accident database.

Average age of the pilots involved in homebuilt accidents is 60.25 years. The median is very close, 62 years. This is for all accidents; the results for fatal accidents is almost identical (60.75 average and 63-year median).

Here's a plot showing the number of accidents vs. pilot age for all homebuilt accidents:

Again, the results for fatal accidents were, essentially, identical.

Here's the data plotted cumulatively.

Not a lot of take-aways from this. My assumption is that the average age reflects people who are more established in life, and have both the time and the resources to engage in the hobby.
