Hello everyone,
I have an opportunity to purchase a Cessna 172L as a restoration project. The wings are off and its been sitting somewhere in OH for some time apparently.
I have lots of questions trying to determine if I want to take this on, thinking it may be easier or cheaper than making a kit for my first build.
The project.
The plane is in pieces, and apparently has had the engine (and unknown other parts) stolen because it is in a shared hanger and the owner move to another state. I am arranging someone to go and look it over to get a idea of what shape it is really in. I think I can get it for just a few thousand dollars, if I can go get it (it's in Ohio and I'm in Texas ) I am waiting on answers to questions about history and logs.
The questions.
First off, how much work can I do as a non A&P? I'm assuming the worst in that it's in pretty bad shape. Is this something that I can do in my garage or will I have to hire an A&P to do most of the work?
If the work has to be done by an A&P, can I get some credit towards A&P certification by doing the work? I am interested in doing builds, so I need to get more educated in mechanics anyway, so I am thinking this could be a good starting point.
What should I look for or know about the plane before making a decision? Any out right show stoppers? Aside from a completely wrecked fuselage?
