Is this a viable technology yet? Sure, I've seen some YouTube videos of some prototypes, but is anyone really doing this yet?
I understand that the problem is not generating the power. In fact, from what I've learned so far, most electric engines weight half or even a third of what a similarly powered 2-stroke would weigh. The issue is battery life.
Are there batteries out there that are light enough for a small airplane with enough to power say, a 50hp engine for 2 hours?
I like the idea of setting up a plane with swappable battery packs. That way with multiple battery packs, you can still fly all day. Although granted you won't really be going anywhere since the batteries are at home base.
But for local fun flights, you get the convenience of an engine that'll always start, the reliability of an electric motor, a bit less noise, and no fuel costs - although your power bill will be going up.
So are we there yet? Is is a ways off still? Will we ever get there?
Waddya think?
