Gentlemen,
I need cataract surgery in both eyes. This isn't an issue in and of itself - but I'm confronted by a choice of IOLs. Do I go with multifocal implants, or single focal implants. From what I hear, a common solution is to implant an IOL for near focus in one eye, and one for distance in the other eye, and leave the brain to sort it out. Apparently, this works very well. My question, however, relates to what is better for pilots. Does having near/distance mono focal IOLs decrease one's depth perception? If it does, I can imagine this would compromise one during landing. Is this loss of depth perception real?
If you have any experience of cataracts and IOL implants, I'd love to hear from you. I will, naturally, take advice from my specialist, but I was just wondering what the combined wisdom of real pilots was on the subject
