Consider the Matlab / Simulink Aerospace / Flightgear cycle as a better use of time to test the concept. (Perhaps starting with AirplanePDQ).
X-Plane is more of a "keep you awake at night flying over Honolulu or landing at MHV (Mojave Air and Space Port) and telling the lads at Scaled about the cool aeroplane you just designed, built and flew in" kind of level of reality...

... In hind sight I'd have been better off spending some of that time teaching myself Matlab. It's not as entertaining as X-plane, but it's far more versatile.
