Hi all,
Given that 100LL will go the way of the dinosaur, what will we be flying behind in future, especially at the lower end of the horsepower scale? How hard would it be to develop and build a simple turbine, of the order of 100-200 hp, with a view to replacing the smaller Lycontinomingentals? The British firm, Rover, had a TP-90 in the 60s, which is now gone (the firm and the engine), which was a simple turboprop giving 90 hp and it would be a brilliant engine in this day and age, especially for experimentals... I worked on industrial turbines for a couple of years and a lot of them are quite simple and will run on anything that can be vapourised; avtur, diesel, natural gas, dump gas...apart from that, why not design a diesel aero engine to run on actual diesel as opposed to avtur? In developing countries, even avtur is scarce and expensive while diesel is plentiful and cheap.....of course, the Greens would have conniptions so why not engines running on ethanol, as appears to be prevalent in Brazil?.
regards TDD
