Why not slats/slots that you can close?

We know the benefits of leading-edge slots for STOL, and also the drawbacks of increased drag at cruise. The slat is not added on to an existing wing, but rather the slot (between the slat and the main wing) is carved out of a complete wing. Yes, they're made by adding a slat structure in front of what looks like a perfectly good wing. You can take the slat off, now the aspect ratio changes and the aft wall of the slot becomes the leading edge. Folks report good results with this on the Zenith types, for instance, with or without VGs. As one would expect, lift at high AOA is diminished, cruise speed is higher.

What happens if you close up the slot instead? You could include nutplates in the wing or attach a leading-edge boot that closes off the slot. So, if you wanted STOL performance at high AOA, leave the slot open. If you wanted to take a long cruise trip, install the blanking plates and plan for longer takeoffs and landings.

I have studied the theory (Hoerner's books are still available by mail order from his widow) but wonder if anyone has done this.
