It has taken from 1947 to 2011 for piston engine cars running at the Bonneville salt flats to go from 403 mph to 442 mph. And that's with tremendous reductions in size and weight due to progress in engines. The biggest advantage at Bonneville is it's FLAT. The biggest handicap at Bonneville is it's SALT. Traction is only about half of what it is on pavement and rolling resistance is higher. If a piston engine car were prop driven, does it sound feasible to go from a standing start to over 500 mph in a distance of about three or four miles?
