I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley when sonic booms could still be heard overhead. Burbank Airport, also in The Valley, is the home of the Lockheed Skunk Works and as I learned recently, the finaly resting place of Kelly Johnson, founder of the Skunk Works and head designer of such greats as the P-38, Constellation, P-80, F-104, U-2, and the SR-71, to name a few. As a budding designer I met my hero back in '73 at a blackbird symposium.

My grandparents are burried just a couple hundred yards away from him and so I thought I'd plan on stopping by to see my hero one more time, while on my way to Aircraft Spruce to pick up a load of metal and hardware.

So here are a couple of pics of Kelly Johnson's perch, which by the way overlooks Burbank and the original site of the Lockheed Skunk Works.

His wife, 24 years his junior, is at his side.
