I just invented one that is controlled by the pilot. Maybe I reinvented the wheel. The pilot flips a switch like a bicycle gear selector, and the prop pitch changesin increments. It stays where the pilot put it, but can wobble inside a range under spring tension. There would be a little bit of friction added, but neglegible. So basically the pilot would have 5 pitch settings to choose from and would manually change them when desired, like accelerating on a bicycle.
Are current constant speed props for ultralights simple or cheap? I heard they used one on the Daedalus, so I guess they can't be too hard to make since that thing had to be kept light and simple.
How many of you have constant speed props on your planes? If not, why not?
Oh, and I attempted a forum search. No luck, so I then did a google search and read that most powered airplanes use oil pressure controlled regulators, which I would not want to use for this.
