fly scared!

My previous dinghy had a wooden mast. It was heavier than a alu one, but not much.
So why not build the truss members the same say ?
I found that the members of my aircraft, 20X20 mm, for the same weight, could be substituted with a 30X40 or 20X50 section if built from 3mm plywood sides. Much larger bending (hence buckling) strenght, I would say, and more bonding surface.
A few solid insert at the joins, and maybe each 100mm or so, would be necessary.

I've never seen something like this (in aircraft building), what's wrong with it ?
