My technical knowledge on comm radios is about 5 on a 1-100 scale; that's the great thing about this forum.

Question: Is the 5W rating on an ICOM (or other) handheld comm radio calculated the same way as 5W on a panel mount such as the Flightline FL-760? There is CW and PEP mentioned in the specs of both; both show "output power" as 5W.

I'm interested in light weight but not to the extent that I can't transmit adequate distances.

Related question: What kind of range would a good handheld with a good external antenna have at a cruise altitude of 4000 AGL or more? I know there are lots of qualifiers such as altitude AGL, type of terrain below, i.e. mountainous, etc. I will occasionally fly in remote country (New Mexico and westward).

Thanks,

Jay Smith
