A friend of mine is doing an electrical engineering degree at University, and thinking of writing a thiesis on Fuel/electric hybrid aircraft, similar to the current hybrid cars. the idea is to use a small lightweigh fuel engine to turn 2 generators, brushless of course, ads they are 90% efficient, and use the power generated to turn an electric engine turning a propellor. aparently on his intitial research, he has found brushless electric motors putting out the equivelent of 70Hp for the same weight as a similar fuel powered aircraft engine, of course the electric engine are smaller and have no need for fiaring ducting for cooling airflow, hence greatly reducing drag...
i am curious if anyone else knows of hybrid designs on the drawing board? hopefully batteries wont be needed as all power will be supplied by the fuel motor.
