Regularly, I see Continental and Lycoming engines have a carburetor air intake shaped like this one below. However, in the above picture, the air intake is just a metal tube bent 90 degrees. What's the deal with that? Doesn't it need a filter especially if its racing at Reno what with all the sand?

With the way the aircraft is set up in the first picture, does it not have carburetor heat?
