I recall reading a story about the building of Liberty ships in ww2, when they were starting to mass produce them. There were furious rows between the welders and the pipe fitters and the other trades and it all boiled down to access. Eventually, after many rows and plenty of punches thrown, they had to stop and have a think about who should go in first with his pipe or duct and who should weld what and when, because there were cases of pipe fitters adding or emoving sections to get around other peoples' pipes and it was ruining the standardisation that was at the core of the design.
