The car Industrie has provided some excellent engines that were worth to be converted for aircraft use;
- Ford A
- VW Boxer
- Corvair
- Aeromomentum (Suzuki)
- Ecoyota (Toyota)
- Loravia (Toyota)
- FlyEco (Smart)
Even some of the VW TDI engines has been modified for aircraft use, especially the bigger 1,9l TDI.
The first 3 mentioned engines where relatively cheap to purchase and modify to, affordable engines., the further the list goes the higher the prices went, to end with the FlyEco in the same Pricing as the Rotax 912 to 915 series.
Its difficult to understand how a new engine block from a car that costs 2000$ can end up in the higher 10grand due to the accessories.
on Facebook there is an established group that discuss the use of some Yamaha engines for Aircraft use with an interesting PSRU, made on purpose for that engine series, indeed something Interessting.
The smart engine, here in Europe at least would be an interesting concept, as the wreckyards are slowly getting smart cars for disassembley.
The smart engine has 3 cylinders and 6 sparkplugs !!!
