I am designing a biplane which in my mind will be a slightly smaller version of the Beech Staggerwing. I am looking for assistance in selecting an airfoil for the wings and the stabilator. I am a home-builder, not an engineer, but I think I understand enough about airfoils to be dangerous. Here are my proposed specs -
-True 4 seat
-2600-2800 lb gross(2200 lb typical)
-1000-1200 lb useful load
-relatively low stall speed
-180 mph cruise
-Rotary Power 180 - 200 hp
-800-1000 mile range(My dad lives an hour north of Toronto Canada)
-Composite construction
-Stabilator
-Laminar airfoils
-Thinking possible sidestick configuration
-Retractable gear
There are so many different airfoils, and it seems that a selection can be somewhat arbitrary, given similar specs.
I mentioned in my intro thread the R1145MS that is typically used as a canard. It doesn't seem to be bothered so much by bugs and dirt, and so retains more of it's laminar flow, and lift. Could this be used as the main airfoils? I haven't lofted yet, so i am not sure of the incidences. The Staggerwing had parallel airfoils set at +3, while the Stabilizer was -3, as far as the Wylan Drawings go. I want to stay pretty close in proportion to the original, so these figures may work.
