Not too long ago, varnishing wood structures appears to be the way to seal them from the nasties that attacked a wood structure. It’s probably still be done today. In other cases, modern epoxies seem to be the sealant of choice. I recall Pops telling me how much he loved hand-brushing sealants, especially on the lattice wings of his project.
Thinking about it from an ease-of-application standpoint, if the structure permits, do modern epoxy primers that we use on metal aircraft/vehicles technically the fulfill the same role as an epoxy sealant that one might brush on? I have to imagine that spraying a fuselage or wing structure with epoxy primer out of a gun would be infinitely easier and faster than brushing everything by hand.
