Does it matter if the oil flowing through the oil cooler flows from the bottom up or from the top down?

My oil cooler has the same sized ports for the inlet verses the outlet so I assume that it does not matter what direction the oil flows through the oil cooler and if it was installed with the ports on the left and right side...however when the cooler is installed with one port on the top and one port on the bottom...

I would guess it is better to have the oil flow from bottom to top to relieve any air bubbles however with thick oil I imagine that they would all flow out over time...

Does anyone know what the OEM design is?

THANKS!!!

Preferred way is outlet at the highest point to prevent air locks (see Rotax 912 installation manual). If the outlet is at the bottom, a priming process might need to be followed whenever the lines/oil cooler have been emptied, to prevent engine damage through prolonged running with no oil supply.
OEM for what engine???
