I'm shopping for +/- 45 deg fiberglass biax cloth (aka "stitched" , "knitted" etc) and I've noticed some products include a 3/4 oz mat as well as the two plies. I can't find a description of the purpose of this mat, but a lot of products include it. Any info? At first I thought it might be some sort of thin veil put between the plies intended to help keep them stable, but comparing the same weight of biax with and without mat, the stuff with the mat is about 50% thicker. So, I'm guessing this is some kind of chopped strand mat that is intended to bulk up the layup for greater thickness and stiffness (and a lot higher resin weight, so not something we'd put on an airplane).
Any additional information would be appreciated.
P.S I also noticed that true unidirectional "woven" fabric (e.g Rutan 7715) isn't stocked at most "regular" fiberglass shops. I figured it would be common, but apparently it's not much used for boats, etc. AIrcraft Spruce has it.
Thanks,
Mark
