Some aircraft have the exhaust pipe facing rearward out the back of the cowling and some stick it straight down from the engine.
I have an owner maintenance Grumman cheetah and the exhaust sticks down about 10 inches and 2 inches diameter, that is a huge amount of drag.
Why wouldn't I "bend" the pipe and have it exiting rearward out the back of he cowling.
Seems like an easy way to get a couple miles per hour.
