The thread about the 150 that ditched made me think of this topic. Do you normally have a procedure or carry certain items when you cross small expanses of water? I'm not talking about the Gulf of Mexico, or the Great lakes, etc. Lets say you are flying to a small island and there is an expanse of about 15 miles that you have to cross. What do you normally do, or take with you? I ask because I've crossed the mouth of the Delaware bay once and when I fly to Cape May NJ there is one stretch that takes me out over a small portion of the Delaware bay, maybe 5-6 miles from shore and about ten miles across. I usually just climb to about 5000+ feet to gain some gliding room and fly as usual I figure in an engine out scenario the altitude should allow me time to setup to get closer to shore.
