I was looking into Ultralight to start getting hours for my sport license thinking it would be cheaper, but what research I've done so far has led me to believe that might be REALLY hard to come by - and if I do find it, it won't be any cheaper than in a traditional GA plane. I'd read somewhere online that through the end of 2012, one could rack up hrs on Ultralight and stack them toward a sport pilot license (though that goes against everything else I've read saying all hrs toward SPL must be logged in an N-numbered aircraft).

I'm interested in Ultralights, but ultimately what I am most interested in is a Kolb type tandem 2-seater. Something I can get a lot of use out of, and it's literally everything that excites me about flying. Seems to me that as far as cost effectiveness, it'd be the cheapest to buy and build my own ELSA, then start from 0 hrs in that very plane.

Am I far off?

Sorry if this is a common question, but I promise I used this site's search feature as well as google ;)
