My 15 yr old 'adopted grandson' has built a Van's practice toolbox (riveted aluminum) with me, and is currently in an EAA build group building an EAA/AMA wood RC model. He's now expressing interest in building the real thing with me. When I've asked what he wants to build, he really has such a limited 'universe' that all he can imagine is building riveted aluminum. Whip smart both academically and with computers, etc, but very limited mechanical exposure at this point. Anyone have a recommendation for a book or article that can explain, in simple language, the different construction types, and at least a minimal level of the engineering thought behind them? ex: what is a truss and how does it work, how does that compare to a stressed skin, etc etc. It took me years (decades?) as an adult for osmosis to force the concepts into my brain. I'm hoping I can make the process a bit smoother and easier for him to give him a head start.
Thanks,
Charlie
