Hi everyone,
I have had many friends over the years that built and raced cars. I know that they could buy, $$$$$, CN machined Aluminum blocks, which are much lighter than a steel block and stronger than a aluminum cast block. People switching from a cast iron block could shave close to eighty pounds I believe. I know this is probably out there, in terms of cost, but if you could have say have a lycoming block made then the weight savings would be huge I would think. I know that they are highly desired in the racing circuit. Now using one would not mean that you necessarily would need to make the engine into a racer. I seem to remember that there were VW blocks made like that.
