I'm planning to use the AS5046 airfoil for my bird. I'm planning for the root foil to be 16% (42" chord) and the tip to be 18.7% (30" chord) to eliminate washout, cruise about 180-200 kts and stall 56 kts (Raymer). Using a thicker airfoil lets me build a strong and light spar and a higher Cl (split flaps) and more room for the retracts.
My question - what are the disadvantages of a relatively thick airfoil other than a little more frontal area/drag? How thick is too thick?
