FS33 | Clever tail wheel retract

Pretty clever mechanism, combining steerable, suspended and retractable. I'm not entirely sure how the inner mechanisms looks like, any clues from anyone?

Various gyrocopters, classic aircraft, CW R3350 etc

https://www.troostwijkauctions.com/nl/aviation-industry/01-32409/ This is where I basically grew up. Sad to see that after Richard's demise his enormous collection/museum is split up. At least 15 of those airframes are airworthy or really close to it. A tiny selection: 2. 1937 Fairchild 24C...

Lecture about the JS3 airframe; from initial design to first flight in 9 months

https://livestream.com/accounts/19840380/events/7714527/player?width=1280&height=720&enableInfoAndActivity=true&defaultDrawer=&autoPlay=true&mute=false It's a two hour lecture. Absolutely worth it. It gives a good insight on how to develop and design a cutting-edge airframe with a small team in...

Some quantitative data about fiber volume for hand-laminating and vacuum-bagging

Why battery-powered aircraft will never have significant range

We've seen more and more discussion on HBA about battery-powered aircraft and hybrids. I've been arguing that it's fundamentally impossible to get range up enough for a practical airframe to be solely powered by batteries, necessitating hybrid aircraft powered by chemical means (piston...

    Man-carrying electric blimp

After seeing this: I got to thinking. Instead of building something like the Aircam, a blimp with electric power is the ultimate STOL craft. Completely quiet and an unobstructed view downwards. Use hydrogen as a lifting gas and you can generate it at home. At about 50 cents per kg of lifting...

Why a high fiber fraction leads to a dis-proportionally higher compressive strength.

Never realized how significant this effect was (and consequently just used the compressive strength for lower Vf and taken the weight decrease for granted.

Flywhale Amphibian certified as European UL

http://www.aerokurier.de/luftsport/ultraleicht-lsa/musterzulassung-fuer-flywhale/729192 It's a great amphibian with some interesting (in the positive sense) design choices. If you're considering an amphib IMHO; this is one of the best choices around. http://flywhale.de/home/gallery.html

JMB VL3 released as kit in the US; 175 mph on a stock Rotax

500 hrs build time, total cost and performance is similar to an RV8 or so, but way lower stall speeds. Good to see a manufacturer release such a kit in the US in a sensible way; get flying planes that are proven, then start selling kits.

    Two-seat "racing" cockpit design.

Many prospective builders want a second seat, but will rarely use it. Others are fine trading off lugage capacity, range etc for having someone in the 2nd seat. Assuming we don't increase MTOW and thus trade off fuel load or bagage capacity, the penalty of that second seat, both in structural...

    A very affordable EFIS (Talos)

After the Garmin G5 and the Dynon's something that's truly affordable, 600 bucks plus an iPad or similar for a full-blown basic EFIS. Sounds like a great deal.

Why expensive composites can be cheaper; an in-depth comparison of weights and cost.

Fixed pitch for unlimited aerobatics possible?

After a long night with a fellow pilot, albeit a talented unlimited aerobatic one, we inevitably ended up in the pilot vs engineer discussion. The head ache the next day was due to the booze ;-) The point; how much power/weight ratio would you need more to give up a constant speed prop if you...

Which aluminium alloy for high temperatures

We are working on a vacuum table with heating capability. Table is 10'X5' with the vacuum bag on top of it. The current bottom plate is some kind of pressed wood (MDF-like), which when heated deforms considerably. We intend to replace this with an aluminium bottom plate. Max service temperature...

    Reno 2016, wazzup?

So Reno is almost over (last day today). Any interesting designs/details? I've noticed Unlimited participation is at an all-time low (neither Dago Red, nor Rare Bear are racing). Speeds in sports and F1 class seem similar to recent years. Participation in F1 is still picking up. So what's new...

    Hybrids taking off.

I stand my position that battery-powered aircraft are never going to work, save a few instances where short range is totally fine. (Motoring home sailplanes; "in the pattern" trainers etc.) It seems that finally, serial hybrids are really taking of with serious parties giving it a serious take...
