I stand my position that battery-powered aircraft are never going to work, save a few instances where short range is totally fine. (Motoring home sailplanes; "in the pattern" trainers etc.)
It seems that finally, serial hybrids are really taking of with serious parties giving it a serious take.

I think both might provide just the opportunity to finally throw out those dreaded expensive aero engines and exchange it for the reliability of an electric drive, combined with the flexibility of putting in a less optimized for flying combustion engine. An 80 hp turbonormalized diesel in that Pipistrel for example would be a fairly straightforward move, with a very modest weight penalty.
