Hi,

My H.T. design is shown in the attachment picture. At the largest elevator deflection, the elevator leading edge will come out the upper surface of the H.T. by 10% of the elevator chord length. I don’t like to push forward the hinge line as the steering engine will become more expensive. The Re of H.T. is only 0.2 million.

I’m wondering

1) How much could the elevator come out of the upper surface of the H.T. without significantly damaging the aerodynamics its performance? What’s the typical value for it? Any experience or reference?
2) How people typically solve this problem? What are the usual ways? And what are the comparisons between them? Any experience or reference?
