say in an auto conversion (subaru ej25) and in trying to shed some weight. would removing the alternator and installing a smaller one OR.... replace the alternator all together with a permenant magnet generator. a stator/ dc rectifier setup with a rotating rotor/magnet. much like the charging systems of most small engines, sportbikes, marine engines, ect. prety much like what the corvair guys are doing with the john deer generator.

from what i can come up with as long as a permenant magnet generator is turning it is making power. where as an alternator needs power to excite the field to make power. thus using power to make power.
