Just received the March 2019 issue of Kitplanes. Jim Weir has a good article on a Volt and Amp gauge that I have been using since about 2008. Low cost and works very good. The Amp gauge is a load gauge. This is perfect for an airplane that does not have an electric system but a small battery for a GPS and a handheld radio, etc, because you always know the load on the battery. Also very good for a wood airplane where you can't use the airframe for ground. Read the article and you will understand . I used the model that is up to 10 amp on the SSSC, but on the JMR I am using the model that uses a shunt and it good for up to 50 amp.
For a battery I have been using a 12 v, 7 amp model airplane starting battery (5 lbs) from Tower Hobbies and put the wall wart battery charger on when the voltage gets down to 10.5 volts. Maybe 10+ hours of flying using the radio, gps, electric oil temp gauge and electric elevator trim.
