I want to get a transponder for an EXP-ab airplane. From my research so far it seems that they cost around $2000 +/- for a new unit with antenna, encoder etc/ ready to use (Garmin GTX 327).

Do you just have to "bite the bullet" on this cost or is there a less expensive transponder alternative, say for homebuilts? Not particularly interested in buying used or second hand electronics though I have seen many yellow tagged TXNSDRS on ebay etc, then you need the encoder etc.
