I was watching an old Steve Canyon TV series episode, from 1958.

He was coming in flying a tandem seat trainer* when the tower noticed the nose wheel was missing.

After the runway was foamed he landed with the gear down.

What I would like to know is would it be better to retract the gear and do a belly landing? Of course, that would do more damage to the plane, but with the gear down there is the possibility of catching the strut and flipping over.

*I don't remember what the designation of the trainer jet was, but it was a tandem seat with wing tip tanks, straight wing. I remember I used to have plastic scale model of it.
