landing gear design

I am toying with a bent wood lamanated landing gear design. I am concidering putting a spreader type axle between the wheels to stop the outward splaying and to share the side loads between both legs thus making the gear rigid. The only examples of this seem to be from the WWI era. Aside from the added drag of the axle, does anyone know of a problem with such a design?
