I'm just playing around (I think...), but has anyone seen the construction methods used for boat building at http://www.oneoceankayaks.com? Essentially, they're using glued 1/4" thickness cedar strips (0.5 lbs/ft^2 density dry) to make complex forms, and then putting a single layer of 4 oz. glass on each side to make a composite sandwich. I have no idea how strong it is (they claim it's stronger than the typical kayak, but many kayaks are just plastic, not composite), but it's absolutely gorgeous, and it's not terribly much heavier than "normal" composite sandwiches.
