Wood and rag??

would attaching fabric to wood with a glue and some stables work? ie using the staples to hold it while the glue dose its thing to add extra strength much like you would do with using nails and glue with wood, or is there a better way to do this?

PS what sort of fabric is used and what is used to "paint/Dope" it these days?
