Does anybody know if there a well-established winner (theoretically and in practice) in terms of prop efficiency between the following scenarios (for a twin engine aircraft)? Let's ignore the pusher vs tractor aspect. Also let's ignore the weight/complexity penalty of the gearbox and contra-props.

  1. Combining gearbox to a single prop
    e.g. the LearFan

  2. Contra-rotating propellers, each connected to a different engine
    e.g. the XB-42

  3. Independent props, as is most conventional
