A thread to share history and or trivia about the evolution of E-AB designs.
Years ago, I asked Clayton Stephens (creator of the Stephens Akro that morphed into the Laser, then the Extra 230 and all subsequent aerobatic monoplanes) about a spar mod that a friend was planning. The objective of the mod was to save a few pounds. Clayton said, “Tell him to leave the spar alone. If those couple of pounds are important, tell him to fly without shoes.”
Historical note: The Stephens Akro is essentially a scaled up F1 racer designed by Lockheed Skunk Works engineer Bill Statler. Carrying race number 31, it raced under several names, but was called Miss San Bernardino and raced by Art Scholl when Clayton morphed it.
