wood vs aluminum leading edges on a Christavia MK1

I am considering purchasing a Christavia project. Christavia is a traditional rag and tube fuselage with a strut braced wood and fabric wing. Workmanship is superb. But one thing I discovered is it has wood leading edges on the wings. Plans call for aluminum. I worry about this is a major plans...

    Design advice for amphibian

Thanks for the comments guys. I guess If I was smart I would just go with what I think is the best set-up. A Rans S7-S on Zenair 1450 amphibs. Many years ago I scratch built from plans a Zenith CH-701. But I sold it 12 years later. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the Searey but...

    Design advice for amphibian

Thanks for the tips. That is what I would want. I get advice and direction from the engineer so I can do most of the design. Keeping the cost down. Intentions would be to be proficient in Solidworks. Those drawings can be communicated to an engineer for modification and analysis. I guess. I...

    Design advice for amphibian

I would use proven methods of construction. Nothing new or radical.

    Design advice for amphibian

I would love to do that but more than likely it would just be for my personal satisfaction. I think they are all missing the mark. Searey comes close but it is too ultralightish to me. I am sure it is a safe and well proven aircraft. Just not my personal choice.

    Design advice for amphibian

You are correct, I meant semi-monocoque. Basically an all aluminum aircraft. I agree about the Icon, it is just pretty and all hype. They won't make it.

    Design advice for amphibian

I am considering designing my own aluminum stressed skin (monocoque) amphibious LSA aircraft using an existing metal wing such as the Zenith CH750 Cruzer wing. How do I find a QUALIFIED engineer to help in this endeavor? I would design using some basic parameters, design knowledge, and eyeball...

Can a Volmer Sportsman amphibian be a LSA?

Thanks guys, that is what I also thought. And I think you are right, I can use a Rotax or a UL engine and save a good 50 lbs and have more HP.

Can a Volmer Sportsman amphibian be a LSA?

The Volmer Sportsman amphibian was designed for a gross weight of 1500 lbs. But if I am the manufacturer can I legally certify and license it at 1440 and fly it legally in the LSA category? I am not trying to be sneaky or anything. Just wondering if it is ok to do. Although I guess it would then...

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

This has been an extremely helpful thread. I appreciate the info. Sounds like in competent hands most of the concerns can be investigated. I already talked to the mechanic and I will be sending him all the documents of which I took pictures. He will review and advise. Then if I go further he...

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

Can a proper inspection find these potential problems? I don't want to be flying under assumptions. I want facts so I can be comfortable flying with my kids in the aircraft. And hey, me too!

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

Great comment. The engine mount was replaced at the same time. But anyway, the records have the change out documented and signed off by a A&P.

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

Thanks much for the info. Great comments about the accessories, ignition. I will be sure to find out where they came from and condition. You said: "the fact it was o'hauled or even new when stored is irrelevant based on current manufacturer guidelines.". Can you explain more what this means...

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

Thanks for the comments. Boy, my guess was that you guys would say stay away and that this is a stupid thing to consider. I guess I just make sure the mechanic is aware of it and go through the normal prepurchase inspection process.

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

I appreciate that good advice and am learning alot about how to check out these old aircraft. But I would like to keep on the topic of the engine and it's long term storage.

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

This is correct except I made an error in that the engine was prepped and put in storage by the Army in 1945 not 1965. So 70 years! It has what looks like a good document noting the prep. It was also overhauled just before the long term storage. The aircraft has been flown regularly since 1985...

engine stored 60 years in cosmoline!

I have been considering an aircraft with an engine that was stored in Cosmoline since 1965. It was installed on the aircraft and it now only has 9 hours on it. I flew with the owner. The engine was cold and he hand propped it and it started on the first strongarm. Ran smooth. It is a C-65 on an...
