Harbor Freight Predator 670 V-Twin Horsepower tests

I’m looking forward to seeing more of your project as it progresses. We really need more experimentation and shared info on v-twin conversions. If I could afford to experiment right now, that’s what I’d be doing. Have you looked into the possibility of something like an inertia starter? I wonder...

Roger Mann is building a new, affordable Ragwing ultralight.

I know he used it on the wing ribs and a few other places on this plane. Epoxy for leading edge wrap. And Gorilla for just about everything else. Roger seems to have only good things to say about Titebond 3, though I don’t know if he has built an entire plane using it. There is at least one Piet...

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

Thanks. Yeah, based on what folks have suggested here, and some more time to think, I agree: probably safest to go with proven experience over something more theoretical. Ive taped the full sized plans together and am tracing it, with only minor corrections for the called for spar spacing, and...

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

They are really nice. Also make excellent paper weights. As a furniture maker, I use them almost every day. I only wish the blades were thinner, like the old Stanley’s, so that they’d be faster to grind and sharpen.

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

Thanks. This is all good to know. I’m gonna stick with the original print out and maintain the original chord line.

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

Thanks, that’s very helpful. I’ll just go with the plans drawing.

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

Thanks! Good to hear it’s worked for you. At this point, I just want to get building, so am ready for the path of least resistance!

    Laying out/ plotting ribs

Hi all, I’m building to plans that include full-scale rib drawings. However, due to some slight inaccuracies between the drawings and critical dimensions and angles, I tried starting afresh and plotting out the airfoil manually, using coordinates generated from the airfoiltools.com website. As...

    35hp Briggs and Stratton conversion

For those building ultralights, it’s maybe worth also checking out the B&S Vanguard 23. lt’s being used on the Legal Eagle with success. I hope to put one on a Banty. If flywheel is lightened or replaced with an aluminum one, and if starter is removed, it should be about the weight of a rotax 277.

    Kimbrel Banty group.

Thanks for the feedback. The prototype Banty weighed 237 lbs., so well under 103 limits. As for the platform choice, I’m just sticking with what I know. The other benefit of FB is that it’s simply where the most people are. It does have its issues. And we may all be kicked off it one day. For...

    Sitka spruce substitute

I wasn’t too impressed by their testing. However, they did supposedly have an engineer run models on at least one of their designs, showing (if I remember rightly), a loss of only 1% of strength switching from spruce to pine. Personally, I don’t really trust those results. But at the end of the...

    Kimbrel Banty group.

Thanks. I considered that. I just find that pictures and files are easier to find and access on the Facebook groups. You can search FB group pages, so the endless string of posts isnt a huge issue. When I thought I could afford to build a Pietenpol, I found that fb group page really helpful. I...

    Kimbrel Banty group.

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve seen this. It’s the best resource (besides the plans) I’ve found so far. Messaged the guy via YouTube and he said he has been very happy with the Banty and would be up for talking about the mods he made. I’m hoping to talk with him soon. Thanks again.

    Kimbrel Banty group.

Hi all, I recently started a Facebook group dedicated to the Kimbrel Banty ultralight. If you’re interested in the Banty, and especially if you have built or flown one, please consider joining and contributing. https://m.facebook.com/groups/1559682584489547/ The group is a place to share...

Roger Mann is building a new, affordable Ragwing ultralight.

Hi all. Roger Mann, the guy behind Ragwing aircraft, is at it again. He designed and built a lot of ultralights back in the day, and has been away from it for a while; but now he’s working on a new ultralight that should cost under $5k to build, in the post-Covid economy. It is also supposed to...
