Military veterans should be aware that in Charlotte, N.C., scammers are targeting them to obtain personal information. Under the premise of calling from the VA, veterans are told by the scammers that if they do not share information, a military compensation benefit might be affected. One hint that callers are not from the VA is the time of day the call is placed, generally when the local VA facility they say they are representing is in fact not open yet. Your best bet is to say you can't talk now, or otherwise put them off. If you have caller ID, make note of the number and contact your local VA facility or Veterans Service Office as soon as possible to get confirmation as to the legitimacy of the call.
