Can I convert a snowmachine engine? Kawasaki 440?

I would like to know if anyone has experience converting snowmobile engines. I been thinking of doing a VW engine but the Kawasaki puts out ten more horse and 40 pounds lighter. I really don't want a two stroke but I'm keeping my options open.
