    Bill Husa (Orion)

I'm not a frequent poster here but I do read a lot, mostly offline and Orion always struck me as someone who forgot more about airplanes than I would ever know. This is tough to type. When you go back and look at his posts, you can see his last reply was last month. To know that the person who...

Homebuilt repairs does an A&P Need to be an IA

I'm curious if the speed of the experimental airplane matters. One of the owners of our hangar has an L-39 and it's considered an experimental airplane. Does it matter if its homebuilt or not?

How good are you at airplane identification?

For those of you who said it was a Hawker 800, congrats! We can't tell if its an XP or not, but it's an 800 all day long. You guys did really well!

How good are you at airplane identification?

I'll let this thread go for a while before I see if anyone can get it correct, and if so, who is the first to get it right.

Can anyone identify what kind of jet is in this photo?

A question for the A&P's out there....

I was wondering if changing an airplane's battery is legal for someone who is not the owner of the airplane and not an A&P. One of the owners of the hangar I manage has a jet there and I saw his copilot, who isn't the owner or the PIC of the plane show up one day to change the battery and began...

    preceptor aircraft

I'm not quite sure if you have enough qualifications to do this. I mean...reading what you wrote...it makes me wonder. Ok, I'm kidding. I had to laugh when I read this, you are so over qualified and you seem so enthusiastic, by golley, I wish you the best in your endeavor. And never give up!

    Free On Line Pilot Exams

I just don't understand why someone would want to get a sport pilot's license. Why not just suck up the expense (you're going to pay it anyway if all you do is rent planes) and get a full private pilots license so you can literally fly ANYTHING? I don't see the lure in it when light sport...

    Can wood be trusted?

In his defense, he WAS an FAA inspector. He long retired and was an instructor at our school. He loves the Bellanca and would fly in one without hesitation, but when prompted why he said because it's built by professionals, not amateurs.

    Weighing an Engine

Oh I understand that and you are absolutely right, but I mean if you know an engine is about 400lbs, does it really matter that much if its 395 or 405? I would say no. if you did the calculations it might move the CG a 1/16" which is negligible. I guess if you had absolutely no clue what it...

How many of you guys fly RC Planes too?

I fly RC. I've had too many to list and currently have a Tower Uproar 40 with a .46 Magnum. That thing is stupid it's so fast and agile. I also have an Eflite Blade CP Pro 2 that I'm trying to learn to fly. If you want, check out my youtube channel. I put a micro camera on my heli and on a...

    Weighing an Engine

Well, then why does the weight of the engine matter? I mean unless you have a few engines to choose from, isn't it pretty much "ya get what ya get?" I mean if you buy an engine, you can't change its operating weight and it doesn't matter until the plane is built? I guess some of this doesn't...

    Weighing an Engine

Maybe I'm being ignorant on this, but why not get the plane on some actual airplane scales, weight the plane before and after the installation, and then derive the engine weight from that? Why won't that work? It's a heck of a lot more accurate than using water as a counterweight.

    Marvel Schebler service bulletin

Wow, that's amazing. That's the same carb that I had to work on for my powerplant practical test for my A and P. Here is the best I can do for you: http://www.tempestplus.com/MSA-14.pdf Just a note: Service Bulletins aren't mandatory. They are advisory in nature.

    Feedback on the Aeroconversions 80hp...

I'm thinking of getting a Sonex and am interested in feedback on these engines. I've heard locals tell me to stay away from them, but on the net, people seem to like them. Any direct experience with them?

    Can wood be trusted?

Is there any way to seal the wood to where you don't have to worry about rot? I mean with the polys of today, we STILL have to worry about rot? Can't we seal that stuff so well that it would last about forever under the sea? Another wood plane I was looking at is the KR-2 but it seems that...

Do two strokes inherently have to have oil in the gas?

Oh for sure, I mean how many PPC's would a 4 stroke be a viable option on? Not many. Like I said, this is ONLY about torque, not about whether I prefer 2's to 4's. I have no preference, each have their uses. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. That being said.... Unfortunately...

    Can wood be trusted?

Well, what I tell people is that look at the DeHaviland Mosquito, one of the fastest bombers of its day, outrunning the fighters chasing it! It was called the wooden wonder. I think a wooden airplane is beautiful, but people say "You build houses out of wood, not airplanes! What do you think...

Do two strokes inherently have to have oil in the gas?

Sir, with all due respect, you are incorrect. It is well known that at a given RPM 4 strokes generally have more torque. They have more torque because they have a longer stroke. Please do not go into a mechanic school with this attitude. You will embarrass yourself. I have a license to work on...
