Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

I really do hope so. With a guiding light like that we cannot fail ! The IO-360 was proved in the last replica, parts are easy to come by, its aircooled and should prove reliable. Have to say though, it would be so good to have had a similar engine.

Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

Many thanks. Will managed to have most of the plans reproduced and there is enough information to reconstruct plans from pictures and the remaining plans. Rod Bellamy, John Blick and myself are presently building it at Bodmin Airfield in the same hangar that Will's dad, Bill Hosie rebuilt the...

Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

You might well be right, but nothing would ever be achieved without the dream, will power, motivation and dedication of someone to achieve that aim. We of 'Old England' will do our best ! We have the engine, an IO-360, and a sponsor to rebuild it, so that is taken care of. The wings are just...

Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

There is a Napier Lyon engine at the Brooklands museum but I dont think they would want to lend it to us ! The engine was well ahead of its time and in a supercharged version was around 1300 HP. There is loads of information on this engine here Napier Lion History

Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

It is Will Hosie, the son of the gentleman who bought the replica off Leisure sport as a project after an accident and rebuilt it here at Bodmin airfield in Cornwall. He owned and flew the above aeroplane which unfortunately is no more. Will, his son has instigated the new build. In fact he...

Supermarine S5 flying replica under construction

Just thought you might like to know we are building a Supermarine S5 ( Schneider Cup race winner) flying replica at Bodmin Airfield in Cornwall, UK. The wings are just about finished and then we shall start on the floats. It wont have the original Napier Lyon engine, but will use a Continental...

Hi, I am from the UK but this is not a scam! I am very interested in this aircraft. There is only one MK 2 in the UK (with this undercarriage) and was speaking to the owner today who has no wish to part with it! If you still have the aircraft could you let me know as would like to look into...

Discussion Thread: The design of a tailless flying wing

Hi Norman, apologies for the delay but am very grateful for your help. Have to say that I think I am starting to get this but slowly! Have you heard of Bob Hoey with his RC birds ? He was onto this proverse yaw and mentions it in a paper. I think it was 1992. The paper is here...

Hi Aeroworx, Thanks for this. Starting to understand that this bell lift distribution is great apart from the fact it works best at one cruise speed. Have found some superb pictures of an albatross that seems to show feathers indicating a stall well inboard of its wingtips. To me this...

Discussion Thread: The design of a tailless flying wing

Could someone help me with my understanding. Here is a quote from the conclusion in a paper by A Bowers. " Neither Prandtl nor Horten followed through to the logical and complete conclusion of their work. Prandtl did not extend the upwash outboard of the wingtip, which would have answered the...

Hi Plncraze, They are complete plans from Debreyer. A French gentleman on this forum built one but cannot get any replies now. I may be wrong but believe it was difficult to be build down to the weight specified. Hopefully he will see this?

Discussion Thread: The design of a tailless flying wing

There was one link from steering arm to one pedal and I think the idea was to use one pedal to push and pull on for nose wheel steering. This would also allow you to deploy both rudders as aibrakes. If I were to couple each pedal to the nose wheel steering this ability would be lost. I would...
