Here in Oz, we are masters of the strange and unusual, probably because we are already in some way strange and unusual to start with.:gig:
Now for the strange and unusual thought of the day, the venerable Rover all aluminium 3500 V8 engine is plentyful, cheap and easily rebuildable from parts found in virually any scrapyard in the country.
It was years ahead of its' time with a spider intake manifold over a seperate valley cover to keep the incoming charge cool, and all together weighed in at at less than the average iron block 2L 4cyl!
It pumps out in standard trim a measly 184 BHP @ 5200 rpm and is remarkably economical (the 3500lb car ran at 20MPG)
I'm thinking with a good redrive I could get a nice compact (they were a small engine) powerful engine that will still weigh in at about the same as the corvair that I can fix anywhere (so I won't have to cry for to long if I break it) for about the same price I would spend on the 'vair.
I do believe the engine is a version of one of the Buick engines.
In fact, here is a table of data for the various engines.
