At OSH this week, I peered into an E-2 Taylor Cub. Owning Wagabond plans, I was surprised to see only a single lateral tube connecting the wing struts, as in the Tailwind. The Wagabond has a steel truss here because the landing gear bungees attach to the middle of the fuselage. Looking under the E-2, I see the bungees attach to the opposite longerons instead.
What was the reason to attach the bungees at the middle? Later Taylor and Piper designs all did this. Is there a geometry here I don't see, or did they just want to shorten the bungees struts to have less hanging out in the breeze?
Regardless, I can see why Wittman went to steel whips.
